Corus helps Swansea County Council make steel recycling more effective

Swansea County Council has increased its kerbside collection scheme to cover the whole county - approximately 104,000 households.

The Council collects paper, glass, aluminium and steel - including food and drinks cans, lids, aerosols and containers - every fortnight.  Previously, the Council had baled the collected aluminium and steel together but recognised it would be more financially beneficial to separate the material at source.

In order to identify machinery that would make this possible, the Council approached Corus for advice on the most appropriate equipment.  Corus was able to supply the Council with an overband magnet to easily separate the steel from aluminium and other materials.

As a result of this new equipment, the 430 tonnes of steel packaging collected annually in Swansea is baled and delivered directly to Corus’ steelplant in Port Talbot to be recycled.
