Information for local authorities and collectors

The value of used steel cans in the waste stream is approximately £117 million a year.

Corus steel packaging Recycling woprks with local authorities, waste management companies, the ferrous scrap industry and community and charity schemes to increase the amount of this steel packaging that is recovered and recycled.

Our activities include:

 

  • Providing advice and technical information on how to recycle steel packaging.
  • Offering advice on setting up and promoting recycling schemes.
  • Giving local authorities and collectors and outlet for recycling through our regional CanRoute network.
  • Providing recycling equipment and support for recycling initiatives nationwide.
  • Recycling steel at all our Corus steelmaking plants: every steel plant is a recycling plant.
  • Generating Packaging Waste Recovery Notes (PRN's) to enable obligated companies and the UK to reach national recycling targets.
  • Providing communication support for recycling schemes.
  • Undertaking technical studies and strategic research to promote future steel recycling.

 

The current value of collected steel cans from kerbside and bring schemes is £235 per tonne.

Types of recyclable steel

All steel packaging is 100% recyclable and contains up to 25% recycled steel.

CanRoute

CanRoute, run by Corus Steel Packaging Recycling, offers a network of regional steel can recycling centres for local authorities, waste collectors and community collection schemes.

Recovery methods

There are several cost-effective ways to collect packaging steel for recycling. The variety of methods available means that steel packaging is particularly easy to collect.

Legislation

The European Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste sets recovery and recycling targets for all packaging materials and covers all types of packaging - domestic, commercial and industrial. The materials are steel, aluminium, paper, plastic, glass and wood.
