Look out for the big recycle
02 Aug 2004
This autumn will see a high-profile promotional and educational campaign to encourage the public to recycle household waste.
Called 'The Big Recycle', it will begin on 18 October with a week of advertising and promotions. It will follow the launch of a national advertising campaign on recycling currently being developed by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP). The campaign, featuring television and press advertising will run for the next 18 months, and will engage consumers across England, encouraging them to recycle "more stuff, more often".
The week is being jointly organised and funded by Corus and other leading materials recycling organisations - Alcan, British Glass, PaperChain, Recoup, Valpak (the leading producer responsibility scheme) - in partnership with WRAP, a major UK programme established to promote resource efficiency. Developed in consultation with LARAC, The Big Recycle organising team also includes international recycling organisation Planet Ark and international remanufacturer Environmental Business Products.
The Big Recycle will feature a major advertising and public relations campaign on recycling spearheaded by a leading celebrity. A web site will provide in-depth information to the public on what can be recycled, how it can be recycled and what recycling facilities exist in their area.
All of the organising groups have extensive experience of promoting recycling. WRAP has the government mandate to create stable markets for recycled products and substantial funding to promote recycling to the general public. Planet Ark has run a successful National Recycling Week in Australia for 10 years. Environmental Business Products organised National Recycling Week in the UK in 2003, whilst British Glass has organised National Glass Week for the last three years. These projects and similar activities by Alcan, Corus, PaperChain, Recoup and Valpak are being channelled into this one initiative.
