Corus supports can recycling in Lanarkshire

25 Mar 2004

Corus Steel Packaging Recycling (CSPR) has stepped in to help Lanarkshire based recycling organisation, LAMH Recycle Ltd, by providing invaluable funding to enable the company to continue its good work.

LAMH Recycle Ltd was established in 1999 as a subsidiary company of Lanarkshire Association for Mental Health (LAMH). The not-for-profit organisation, which has an environmental business focus, was set up to provide individuals experiencing mental health problems with training and employment opportunities within a supportive environment.

The organisation currently operates two key recycling initiatives – a can recycling project which was set up in Motherwell in 1999, and a similar initiative for paint recycling which was established in Coatbridge in 2000. To date, over 80 individuals have accessed these two projects with just over 50% progressing to mainstream training and employment opportunities. Every week, 14-15 individuals are involved in the projects – some for a few hours and others for up to five days.

Since 1999, the can recycling project has resulted in 5.5 million cans being recycled and the paint recycling project has prevented over 9,000 litres of paint from being sent to landfill, with the paint being distributed to over 300 voluntary groups and low-income households instead.

Steel can recycling has been identified as a major future focus for the organisation, which hopes to significantly increase the amount of steel it collects through its project. Wishing to seek guidance on how best to increase the project’s efficiency, LAMH Recycle Ltd approached Corus Steel Packaging Recycling (CSPR) - Corus’ centre of expertise on steel packaging recycling.

As well as providing advice on the running of the steel project, CSPR has provided funding which will be put towards the post of Operations Manager and will also contribute to the cost of an additional collection vehicle for the project.

David Williams, CSPR’s Commercial Manager and Recycling Development Representative for the North and Scotland comments: "LAMH Recycle Ltd is a great example of an organisation with a positive attitude towards the environment, recycling and the community. By providing work experience to people within the local community, and increasing the amount of steel, paint and computers being recycled in the region, they are making sure that the recycling message is being heard loud and clear across Lanarkshire."

Notes to editors:

Corus Steel Packaging Recycling (CSPR) is Corus’ centre of technical and communications expertise on steel packaging recycling. It aims to facilitate and promote the recovery and recycling of all types of steel packaging in the UK. Its objectives are to provide an end market for the recovered material, to increase the recycling infrastructure through the strategic application of PRN revenue, to provide advice and technical information to public, private and not-for-profit organisations on recovery schemes and to raise environmental awareness among consumers and the commercial sector.

Most cans found in the home – often called "tins" - are actually made of steel. They include food cans, pet food cans, drinks cans, aerosols, paint cans, etc. They are easily recyclable and all contain around 25% recycled steel.
