New magnet a big attraction at Yorwaste

Corus Steel Packaging Recycling (CSPR) has helped Yorwaste, a local authority owned waste disposal company (LAWDC) based in North Yorkshire, increase the efficiency of its sorting operations by providing a new overband magnet for the extraction of steel cans from kerbside material.
Yorwaste opened a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) at Hessay, near York in May 2002. The new MRF enabled their kerbside collection of dry recyclables, including steel cans, to be expanded, however efforts to provide clean material for reprocessors were hampered by inefficient separation facilities.
David Williams, CSPR’s Commercial Manager and Recycling Development Representative for the North & Scotland committed PRN funds to purchase a new overband magnet to improve the operation.
John Miller, Yorwaste’s Recycling Manager is pleased with the support from Corus. The new overband magnet is "four times faster than the old one" and has helped Yorwaste speed up processing times and overall efficiency for the can sorting side of the business.
CSPR’s David Williams says: "We are all really pleased that the magnet has made such a big difference to the MRFs efficiency. Yorwaste have proved to be an ideal partner for Corus, as they combine a commitment to service delivery with sound commercial sense. We are looking forward to working with them more in the future, and with their partner Local Authorities."
Yorwaste are currently processing around 100tpa of steel cans from 33,000 households in York and Harrogate, and bring sites in the Ryedale area. Plans to include another 20,000 households by the end of 2003 means they have the potential to double their steel can recovery rate. These steel cans will be delivered to an approved CanRoute centre for subsequent recycling at a Corus steel plant.
Ends January 2003
