Dual role for Corus at Richmond

 February 2003

The January launch of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames’ (LBR) new multi-material kerbside scheme was the culmination of a major 2002 PRN investment project for Corus Steel Packaging Recycling (CSPR).

Corus plays a dual role in supporting LBR council in their efforts to increase recycling in the borough. Firstly, as the provider of new separating and baling equipment for LBR’s materials recycling facility at Twickenham.  Secondly, in conjunction with other re-processors, CSPR forms part of an 'End User Consortium' providing a secure end market for steel cans recovered from their new multi-material kerbside scheme.  The scheme which is operated by paper recycler Cheshire Recycling covers 53,000 homes in the Richmond area.

Stephen Howard, CSPR’s regional development representative for the South East committed funds from Corus’ 2002 PRN income to purchase separation and baling equipment. The technical and financial support from CSPR means that the estimated 175 tonnes of steel cans that could be recovered annually from LBR’s new kerbside scheme can be processed efficiently at their MRF at Twickenham Central Depot.

LBR were the first London Authority to succeed in securing a grant from the London Recycling Fund to improve its door-to-door recycling service across the borough. The scheme, which began in November last year, has already registered a 50% increase in the amount of materials recycled. The Mayor of London has lent his support to the scheme saying: “I am delighted that households in Richmond will receive this new multi-material doorstep recycling service... It is schemes and partnerships such as this that I am committed to in my Waste Strategy and that are needed to turn London from a poor recycling city to an ‘exemplar green city’.”

The steel cans recovered by the scheme will be routed through European Metal Recycling Ltd, one of 12 approved Corus CanRoute centres in the UK, to a Corus steelplant for recycling into new steel products.
