CSPR supports steel can recycling initiative in South East Wales

Financial support from Corus Steel Packaging Recycling has helped Newport Wastesavers to further expand their steel can recycling activities in South East Wales.
Newport Wastesavers (NW) is a community group founded in 1985 committed to establish, operate and develop a variety of recycling services in the Newport area. Their collection of cans from consumer waste has expanded consistently over the last 5 years achieving a 7-fold increase from 30 tonnes in 1998 to around 210 tonnes in 2002.
NW’s recycling initiatives have been so successful that in 2002 it was chosen as an “Exemplar Project” by the Welsh Local Government Association. This marked the beginning of a new challenge for the group: to increase its recycling rate from 12% to over 50% by 2006.
The expected rise in steel can recovery prompted Garvin Freeman, CSPR’s Regional Recycling Development Executive, to commit PRN funds to support NW in a move to a larger site and toimprove the efficiency of the current can sorting and processing system.
Mike Croxford, Newport Wastesavers’ general manager, says:
“The provision of funding from CSPR has enabled Wastesavers Recycling to greatly increase the efficiency and tonnage of steel cans recycled at our depot in Newport. The financial assistance, coupled with the support and advice from Corus has been of the greatest help to enable us to reach our recycling targets. The directors, staff and volunteers are all very grateful to Corus for their continued help and good service to our non-profit making organisation”
Cans recovered by Newport Wastesavers will be delivered to SimsMetal Newport, a Corus approved CanRoute centre, one of twelve across the UK, for subsequent delivery to Port Talbot works for recycling.
Ends January 2003
