Corus supports recycling in Monmouthshire

10 Jun 2003

Monmouthshire Unitary Authority has benefited from a financial contribution from Corus Steel Packaging Recycling to introduce a multi-material kerbside recycling scheme in the area.

Monmouthshire Community Recycling (MCR), a not-for-profit company established by local residents, will manage and promote the doorstep scheme in partnership with Monmouthshire County Council.

The multi-material kerbside programme, starting the first week of July, will collect steel and aluminium cans, paper, glass and textiles.

Each household will be provided with a 55 litre black box, which will be collected on a weekly basis. The scheme, which already employs seven people, will initially cover 12,000 households in the south of the Authority. If successful, it will be expanded to cover all 38,000 households in the county with the potential to save 1/3 of waste going to landfill. In its final stage the project could also contribute to the creation of 30 jobs in the area.

Paul Quayle, Monmouthshire Recycling Officer, says:

“Monmouthshire is facing one of its greatest challenges to curb the growth in waste, and increase the 3R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Within the next few years Monmouthshire County Council’s waste strategy includes a dramatic increase in recycling.

Monmouthshire’s record has always been one of the best in Wales but we plan to get better. We currently recycle over 10% of our waste but in the next 10 years we plan to increase that to at least 40% of our rubbish. With the help of Monmouthshire Community Recycling and of course local residents, Monmouthshire County Council plans to meet the challenge.”

Garvin Freeman, Corus Regional Recycling Development Executive, says:

“We are all very pleased to support recycling initiatives like this that have positive a impact on the environment and the community. We are glad that our contribution is helping to increase the recycling infrastructure in rural areas such as Monmouthshire and that is involving actively local residents.”
