Corus sets wheels in motion for multi-material recycling by ACRE

A major PRN commitment from Corus Steel Packaging Recycling (CSPR) will enable Action for Community Recycling Enterprises (ACRE) to introduce steel and aluminium can collection into their kerbside scheme in the Rochdale area.

ACRE, in partnership with Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council, serves 79,000 households with a kerbside collection of glass and paper only, however both ACRE and the council were keen to operate a multi-material scheme.

A commitment from CSPR’s Commercial Manager David Williams for significant financial support prompted ACRE to reassess their collection operations with positive results.   They have since acquired a new collection vehicle from the PRN funds and included additional cages on existing vehicles enabling the expansion of the kerbside service to include steel and aluminium cans.

David Williams, CSPR Commercial Manager says: I am extremely pleased that the contribution of steel PRN funds has helped both the community sector and the Local Authority to improve an already successful kerbside scheme by the addition of mixed cans.

Laurence Tomlinson, ACRE’s Business Manager, says: “ We intend to roll out the inclusion of cans by May 2003.   We expect a good response and look forward to working towards extracting a high proportion of the cans used in the borough.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank CSPR for their assistance without which ACRE would not have been able to include cans at this early stage of our borough wide kerbside scheme.”

The scheme is expected to recover approximately 300 tonnes of mixed steel and aluminium cans per year.   The steel cans will be routed through European Metal Recycling Ltd. (EMR), one of the 12 approved Corus CanRoute centres in the UK
