Corus and local recyling company share a 'can-do' attitude
09 Oct 2003
CDCR works throughout the region to collect steel and aluminium cans which are then sent to reprocessors to be recycled. The organisation was set up over ten years ago by Aberdeenshire Social Services to provide practical skills-based work experience for adults with learning difficulties. A team of five staff work with 20 trainees at any given time, collecting cans from over 170 different premises every week. With collections from pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels, and deliveries from offshore thanks to Enviroco and Total Waste Ltd, CDCR plays a key role in increasing the amount of steel and aluminium being recycled in the region.
Initially CDCR focused their efforts on collecting aluminium cans but recently, having realised the recycling potential of steel cans, they have broadened their collections to include steel. With the forthcoming launch of Fraserburgh’s kerbside collection scheme in 2005, CDCR is also keen to take on the cans collected through this initiative.
Recognising the potential for a significant increase in the amount of steel they may be collecting and handling, CDCR contacted Corus Steel Packaging Recycling, Corus’ centre of technical and communications expertise on steel packaging recycling, to ask for advice on how to cope with this increase.
CSPR responded by providing CDCR with baling equipment which has been made possible by CSPR’s investment of PRN revenue*. The equipment will enable CDCR to create compact bundles of steel cans which are easier to handle than loose cans and can be transported more cost effectively. In short, the equipment will help CDCR’s recycling activity to be more effective.
David Williams, CSPR’s Commercial Manager and Recycling Development Representative for the North and Scotland commented: “Can-Do is a really appropriate name for this company which has such a positive attitude towards the environment, recycling and the community. By involving local businesses in recycling schemes and providing work experience to people within the local community, Can-Do is making sure that the recycling message is being heard loud and clear.”

* Packaging chain companies are obliged to hold Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs), as evidence that their legal responsibility to recover and recycle has been fulfilled. PRNs are sold by UK reprocessors (i.e companies like Corus which can recycle). They can be sold either to an obligated company or to a Compliance Scheme Activity on their behalf. Income raised by CSPR from the sale of PRNs (Packaging Recovery Notes) is invested in initiatives, which enhance and develop the infrastructure for the collection of steel packaging from households and businesses across the UK.
