CanRoute bales half a billion!

September 2002
Summer 2002 saw a significant milestone reached by CanRoute, Corus Steel Packaging Recycling's (CSPR) network of regional steel can collection centres. Figures collated during August this year indicated that 500 million steel cans had been delivered into CanRoute. This equates to 20,000 tonnes diverted from landfill into Corus steelplants for recycling, making a significant contribution to steel's 37% recycling rate.
David Williams, Commercial Manager for CSPR says "July 2002 saw the best monthly result for the CanRoute scheme so far with almost 1200 tonnes being delivered into the system. Its continuing success is largely due to our commitment to invest PRN funds in new recycling initiatives around the UK. We are particularly pleased that community collectors as well as local authorities and the waste & scrap industries are finding that CanRoute offers a simple and economic market for steel cans."

Notes to Editors:
- CanRoute was set up in June 1999, to provide a simple, sustainable and cost-effective way of increasing steel can recovery from the domestic waste stream
- There are 12 regional CanRoute centres across the UK providing a vital link between recovery in the community and recycling in the steelplant.
- CanRoute provides a guaranteed route to market and minimum price (currently £30/tonne) from Corus for collectors.
- The CanRoute system is complemented by several other recovery systems for steel cans. These include Save-a-Can, magnetic extraction directly from household waste and other Local Authority/public recycling schemes.
