A council tax-free year draws closer for two Swansea residents
26 Feb 2008
Mr and Mrs Banfield from Treboeth, Swansea, could be in with a chance of winning a council tax free year following the latest prize draw of a recycling initiative launched by Corus and Swansea Council.
By attaching special address tags to their green recycling bags, residents in Swansea are automatically entered into the grand prize draw with a chance to win 12 months without having to pay their council tax. It is hoped that the incentive scheme will lead to an increase in recycling rates and, as a result, an increase in the amount of steel packaging sent to Corus’ Port Talbot steel plant for reprocessing, which will help reduce the amount of domestic waste currently sent to landfill.
Mr and Mrs Banfield are the fourth of the bi-monthly winners, who are awarded a can crusher by Corus and a pair of champagne flutes made from recycled glass. It is hoped that the bi-monthly prizes will maintain the scheme’s momentum.
Nicola Bennett, Communications Manager at Corus, comments: “It is very encouraging to see Swansea residents taking part in the scheme. Steel is 100% recyclable with no loss of quality and once recycled will become another new steel product such as a car, train, plane or even another can. It so easy to take part, all you have to do is attach a tag to your recycling bag!”
Trish Flint, Swansea Council’s Recycling Team Leader commented on how successful the scheme had been so far. She said, “The scheme has been really successful with thousands of residents entering every draw. It shows that our residents are utilising our kerbside recycling scheme, helping us to reduce the amount of household waste sent to landfill.”
