RECORD INCREASE IN VALUE BENEFITS STEEL CAN COLLECTORS

01 Apr 2008

Corus has announced a 48% increase in the amount it pays for steel cans delivered to CanRoute collection centres throughout the UK.  The value of steel cans has risen by £60 to an unprecedented £185 per tonne – benefiting all local authorities, waste management and collection companies that sell collected steel packaging to Corus via the CanRoute system.

The increase, which came into effect on 31st March 2008, reflects growing global demand for scrap steel, as well as the achievement of the CanRoute system, which had a record year in 2007.

CanRoute provides a network of regional centres to which steel packaging can be delivered.  Local authorities and other collectors benefit from being able to deliver their cans to a convenient location, reducing the delivery distance (and therefore the transport costs) and the need for additional storage areas locally.  Collectors also benefit from prompt payment for their steel cans.

The 14 centres, located throughout the UK, are operated by leading steel processing companies who receive, quality check, store and bale steel cans before delivering them to Corus in the correct form for them to be recycled at one of Corus’ steel reprocessing sites.
