Lighting columns & traffic signposts

Although there have been many changes throughout the years with regard to corrosion protection and the structural  design of street lighting columns, Corus Tubes still uses the same method of joining shafts and bases together i.e. a Hot Shrunk Joint. This ensures that the structural integrity of our lighting column is not dependant on welding and as a result, the joint is the strongest available in the market.

Corus Tubes manufactures lighting columns to the latest standard of EN40. Furthermore, they were the first lighting column manufacturer to acheive BS 5750 Part 2 and have since obtained ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and Highways Sector Scheme Approval. Corus Tubes continues to produce standard tubular columns and design them to meet customer specific requirements.

The Galvanisers Association confirm that due to less air pollution, galvanised structures should last more than 40 years. However, most corrosion failures occur at ground level and there has been a lot of work in the industry to help alleviate this problem. Corus Tubes now offers in addition to the standard galvanised column with bitumen root, an enhanced Glass Flake system that manufacturers give a life expectancy of up to 35 years.

Standard column assets as follows: -

• Mounting heights covered in EN40 up to 12m
• Standard shaft and base diameters range from 76.1mm - 168.3mm, and 139.7mm - 219.1mm, respectively.
• Two standard bracket arm designs i.e. Poplar and Birch; additonal requirements can be accomodated to on request.
• Columns with standard planted root, welded flange plates or cranked roots. Other possibilities can be considered.
• 3 types of standard protection: Hot dipped Galvanised, MIO High Solids Epoxy paint finish and Polysiloxane paint finish.
• Root protections: Bitumen or Glass Flake Root as standard, others available on request.
• Rounded end doors are supplied as standard. A flush fit door featuring a double lock giving additional vandal resistance also available. Other types may be available or considered.

Raise & Lower column: -

Health and Safety is at the forefront of all Corus Tubes designs and recently Corus has added a New Folding Lighting Column to its extensive product range. The new, refined Folding Column benefits from its traditional column appearance and easy-to-operate mid hinged folding mechanism.

The column is easily lowered and raised in a controlled manner using a compact, user-friendly tool. This innovative folding design and the one person operated hand held tool offers a completely new approach to managing maintenance - all the necessary work can be carried out on ground level, thus making the maintenance work less time consuming, convenient and more importantly, safer.

The hinge mechanism is hidden away under a cone and it can be accessed through the door only, thus providing maximum security and safety. Furthermore, the column is supplied with a flush fit door as standard.

Traffic Signposts

In addition to lighting columns, Corus Tubes offers enlarged base traffic signposts that incorporate the unique Corus Tubes hot shrunk joint, and parallel signposts.

Parallel signposts are available in standard lengths or exact lengths by arrangement.

Available standard diameters: -

• 60.3, 76.1, 88.9, 114.3, 139.7, 168.3, 193.7, and 219.3

Finish: -

• Hot dipped galvanised. Root protection and paint finishes available on request.
• Caps and base plates to suit.
