Liquid Steel Temperature Control

The Liquid Steel Temperature Control System comprises two complimentary systems, namely "Ladle Thermal Tracking" and "Final Ladle Dip".

Ladle Thermal Tracking

This system consists of a real-time computer model for the continuous calculation of the refractory temperature profiles of all ladles in operation on plant. This enables the most thermally suitable ladle to be selected for tapping for each cast. The model calculates the thermal state of the refractory wall and bottom linings of each ladle.

AIM Final Ladle Dip (FLD)

This model calculates the aim final ladle temperature for all casters. Liquid steel temperature loss in the ladle and tundish are calculated from knowledge of the thermal state of the ladle refractories.

There are significant benefits to be gained using these models, including:

  • Saving of up to $200,000 per slab caster, per year, from reduced returns.
  • Reduction in centreline segregation as a direct result of improved temperature control.
