Pilot Plant – Melt Services Facilities

A four tonne capacity A.C. electric arc furnace (EAF) is available to produce melts in a wide range of compositions, including carbon steels and stainless steels.

Secondary facilities include provision for solids injection, gas and ladle arc heating.

The EAF powered by a 1500 kVA supply is used to melt a scrap charge and by using conventional steelmaking practices, produces the different liquid steel compositions. The availability of an on-site analytical laboratory to monitor the progress of the refining stage is an important link in ensuring that good control of melt composition can be achieved. Steel can be cast into ingots or processed further on the strip or billet casters.
