Pilot Plant – Continuous Casting Facilities
A pilot scale vertical continuous casting plant is available for casting trials.
The machine is currently configured to cast up to six metres of billet section of 152mm (6") square. Trial applications might include investigations into experimental steel compositions produced via the pilot plant steel melting facilities, novel casting conditions, or machine developments.
Because of the open structure of the casting machine, changes in operating conditions or configuration are readily achieved. Facilities for the metallurgical examination of the cast product are available at Teesside Technology Centre.
Further processing of the product can be arranged at Swinden Technology Centre, or via an arrangement with a Corus production site.
Examples of recent work include:
-
Low superheat casting internal quality improvements.
-
Plasma refinement trials.
-
Rapid quenching studies to reduce sub-surface crack sensitivity in quality critical engineering and peritectic steels.
