Pilot line facilities

Corus has a number of pilot line facilities.

Laser Welding Laboratory

Corus Netherlands has opened a laser welding laboratory dedicated entirely to automotive applications. Laser welding is a technique which produces narrow welds at high processing speeds but with low distortion levels. It is more and more frequently used today in car manufacturing, ship building and parts manufacturing.

Long Product Rolling Dept. Pilot Facilities

Pilot scale physical modelling trials are an essential part of technological innovation, whether as the verification or calibration of a mathematical model of the process, the development of new product chemistries, or the simulation of a plant process.

Pilot Plant – Continuous Casting Facilities

A pilot scale vertical continuous casting plant is available for casting trials. The machine is currently configured to cast up to six metres of billet section of 152mm (6") square. Trial applications might include investigations into experimental steel compositions produced via the pilot plant steel melting facilities, novel casting conditions, or machine developments.

Pilot Plant – Direct Strip Casting Facilities

A laboratory scale direct strip caster is also available for initial feasibility studies. Work has been undertaken on a range of stainless and carbon steel grades to assess both process development, product properties, and quality issues including direct application of the material into conventional products, such as tube and hollow sections. The equipment has also been used in studies of non-ferrous metals such as tin, zinc, lead and cobalt.

Pilot Plant – Melt Services Facilities

A four tonne capacity A.C. electric arc furnace (EAF) is available to produce melts in a wide range of compositions, including carbon steels and stainless steels.
