Corus fully supports the York Cares Right to Read Scheme. Right to Read is a simple way of helping primary children to develop their reading skills. Volunteers provide support to teachers by listening to children read for an hour over lunchtime each week or fortnight. Corus have been providing volunteers at two schools in York for over three years now this is generally undertaken during the volunteers lunchtime. The teachers at the schools are very grateful for this assistance, as many no longer have time to listen to children read on a one-to-one basis. Having had feedback from some of the teachers involved there is a noticable, measured improvement in the reading levels of children who regularly have volunteers listen and guide them in their reading. Teachers also say that Right to Read volunteers act as valuable role models for primary school children.
Corus sponsors York Cares; a scheme which is all about bringing businesses, communities and employees together to make a positive difference to the city in which we live and work. York cares runs a number of schemes that benefit both local communities and the City's environment.
As part of the York Cares Scheme staff at Corus volunteer to give up an hour of their time each week to assisting very young children who have trouble with basic numerical concepts such as counting, telling time and using money.
By playing simple board games with children during a lunch break volunteers help them to aquire these most basic skills and gain confidence in their own abilities.
