Taking strategy seriously

29 Jan 2008

The 70th Corus Chess Tournament sponsored by Corus in IJmuiden for its fifth year in succession has seen its final match draw to a dramatic end after two weeks of matches.

The tournament had two winners on Sunday, January 27th: Levon Aronian, age 25 (Armenia, 9th on the world ranking list), and Magnus Carlsen, age 17 (Norway, 17th on the world ranking list). Aronian and Carslen drew the match to an end, with an equal score, thus sharing the first place in grandmaster group A.

This year, the tournament in the Dutch village of Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands, close to the IJmuiden steelworks, celebrated its seventieth anniversary. The chess tournament has been a great success for Corus in IJmuiden. Participants included numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11 and 13 of the world ranking list and around 50,000 people from around the world logged onto www.coruschess.com to view the competition daily. The joint winners outpaced favourites, including India's Vishy Anand and other elite players.  Some 2,000 amateur chess players played every day at the tournament.

Corus in IJmuiden clearly takes its strategy seriously, and tomorrow, on January 30, 2008, is hosting a simultaneous chess match between the Dutch grandmaster Loek van Wely and Dutch politicians and political journalists in The Hague.
