Corus team makes molehills of mountains

A team of Corus workers swapped the heat of the steel mill for the bracing air of Britain’s highest mountains to raise money for a local charity.

And despite it being their maiden attempt – on very limited training – the Llanwern sextet also managed to finish first in the famous Three Peaks Challenge.

“It was the first time that we had done anything of that nature,” said team leader Bryn Thomas. “We did our training in the Brecon Beacons, but it was nowhere near as tough as climbing the three highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales.”

The men completed the challenge - scaling Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 22.5 hours – beat four other teams and raised more than £8,000 for the Anthony Nolan Trust.

The ‘Corus Steelers’ also comprised manufacturing process specialists Andy Webb and Dave Williams, Distribution Quality and Safety Manager Matthew Waters, process development specialist Glyn Williams and hotmill manufacturing manager Mike Hill.

Corus supplied the team with appropriate running and trekking gear and matchfunded their efforts to the tune of £500. 

“Our staff have supported the Anthony Nolan Trust in the past - last year, the company’s Hot Rolled Products Department raised £1,300 for the charity by taking part in a dragon boat race,” said Keith Farron. “So we were only too willing to help with Bryn’s team’s fundraising – and we’re very proud of their achievement in not only taking on this challenge, but also conquering it magnificently.”
