Corus champions Sparkle campaign

15 Oct 2007

Newport employer Corus has thrown its support behind the Sparkle Appeal by donating £1,000 to the children’s centre project.

Currently the focus of an Argus campaign urging Assembly health minister Edwina Hart to plough £5.9 million into the South Gwent Children’s Centre, the appeal has been selected by the steel company to receive one of its local community awards.

“There are 1,200 disabled children in Newport, South Monmouthshire and South Torfaen,” said Corus Community Spokesman Keith Farron.  Services for them are scattered across the county and difficult to access.  The new children’s centre will provide all the necessary support under one roof and in a central and accessible location.

“Many Corus Llanwern employees, past and present, have children with disabilities - and the company is proud to be associated with a project that will make all their lives easier.”

The Sparkle Appeal has the land where it plans to build the centre, at St Woolos Hospital, Stow Hill, Newport, but needs to raise a further £3m to equip the interior.

“We are absolutely delighted that Corus has supported us through this fantastic donation,” said Vanessa Garland.  “Support like this really does make a huge difference and ensures that the South Gwent Children's Centre is one step closer to becoming a reality.  Many thanks to all at Corus!"
