Cogent Power Ltd
Cogent Power Ltd is a leading manufacturer of electrical steels with businesses at Orb in Newport, South Wales and Surahammar in Sweden.
Cogent is also the largest independent transformer core manufacturer in North America and a major electrical steel service centre through its subsidiary Cogent Power Inc in Burlington, Ontario.
Electrical steels play an essential role in the generation , transmission, distribution and use of electrical power and are one of the most important magnetic materials produced today. The three prinicipal types are all produced in the electrical steel businesses of Cogent.
- Grain oriented steels, 3% silicon-iron alloys developed with a grain orientation to provide very low power loss and high permeability in the rolling direction, for high efficiency transformers. These materials are made at Orb Electrical Steels.
- Non-oriented fully processed steels are iron-silicon alloys with varying silicon contents and have similar magnetic properties in all directions in the plane of the sheet. They are principally used for motors, generators, alternators, ballasts, small transformers and a variety of other electromagnetic applications. These materials are primarily produced at Surahammars Bruks AB in Sweden.
- Non-oriented semi-processed steels are largely non silicon alloys sold in a non annealed condition to enhance punchability. Low power loss and good permeability properties are developed after final annealing of the laminations. These materials are made at Orb Electrical Steels Ltd and sold under the Newcor and Polycor trademarks
