Rapid Steel for Singapore Metro
28 Jan 2003
After two years of hard work and close co-operation with three contractors, Corus Asia's Singapore office has pulled off a major coup against strong regional competition to supply a significant structural package for the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit System (SMRT).
The material - totalling 10,000 tonnes altogether - is to be used in the construction of five stations along the new Circle Line - a fully automated metro along the sea front, of which the initial 5.2 km section is due to open in 2005/6. Delivery of the order, consisting of 6,000 tonnes of beams and 4,000 tonnes of sheet piling sourced from CC&I, commenced in April and was completed in early June.
Serving Singapore's four and a half million inhabitants, the SMRT system is considered to be one of the most advanced in the world and was the first metro to introduce platform sliding doors to protect passengers from moving trains and to allow better air regulation in the underground station areas. Its lines are served by 140m long, six-car, air-conditioned trains, which reach maximum speeds of 80km per hour.
