Auckland Takes a Shine to Stainless Steel

29 Nov 2004

CI New Zealand supplies T316 for new Britomart Transport Centre

The NZ$1.2million package of T316 stainless steel put together by Corus International New Zealand for the country’s sparkling new train station in Auckland, and its biggest architectural project at the present time, added an extra shine to the day for the local CI project team when the order was clinched.

With added value services doubling the value of the wide range of stainless steel products supplied for the brilliantly designed Britomart Transport Centre and the visual impact derived from the way they were applied - the final outcome was more than satisfying for all concerned at CI New Zealand. Sheet, coil, plate, chequer plate, round bar, flat bar, angle, schedule pipe and a host of miscellaneous items were all on the tariff and the services supplied included cutting coil to custom length sheets, arranging mirror polishing of sheet and pipe, technical assistance and commercial advice. Materials were supplied from international producers in Asia and Western Europe.

Success was achieved by using a co-ordinated approach in targeting decision-makers and project managers and following leads through to fabricators where the strong relationships that had been built enabled the sales teams to secure orders. Applications included platform air diffusers, pillars, fire hydrant cabinets, ceiling conveyor mesh guides, platform tactile indicators, lift architraves, skylight water feature, handrails, balusters and glass trims.

Completed in July 2003 at a cost of NZ$204million, New Zealand’s first underground station is the initial stage of an extensive redevelopment of Auckland’s downtown precinct. The Britomart Transport Centre commissioned by the City Council, links bus, rail and ferry services.
