Dean Beirne, Quality Design, Product and Market Development
Through my Functional Traineeship, I have been based within the Quality Design department at Llanwern.
As a member of the department, I am responsible for ensuring that the final product delivered to the customer is fit for the purpose that it is to be used for.
To do this I review customer product requests as entered by the commercial department to ensure that they can be manufactured on either the Llanwern or Port Talbot sites. This can require liaison with the technical and/or manufacturing areas of the works to get approval on non-standard manufacturing requirements, any unresolved issues are then advised back to the commercial department for discussion with the customer.
We are also responsible for ensuring that manufacturing process routes created by our computer systems are correct. These routes are created through the use of standard product information and user maintained rules, which are constantly reviewed.
This role is very IT based requiring technical knowledge in both Chemistry and Materials along with the need for good people skills.
I have been on health and safety training days, along with tours through the plant, which has enabled me to gain a better understanding of the business and to be aware of the effect that my department has.
During this time I have received excellent support from my line manager and my colleagues, who have all been more than willing to offer support and guidance. Human Resources have been constantly available to ensure that everything was progressing, and gave me the opportunity to address any issues that I had.
