Martin Liddle - Electrical maintenance engineer

Since taking my first substantive appointment at Redcar Coke Ovens, I have now fully settled into the role and my responsibilities have steadily increased allowing me to become more involved in all aspects of the plant. Initially my role was within the plants project team, working up capital expenditure schemes aimed at restoring the key areas to good operating condition.

This role requires liaising with plant operators and management, process specialists and engineers in other disciplines on a daily basis to ensure that our solutions are workable, manageable, and cost effective.

In addition to this role, I have been seconded to the position of Electrical Manufacturing Engineer for Redcar Coke Ovens. I deal with any problems that arise, such as breakdowns and operating faults and co-ordinate the maintenance across Redcar Coke Ovens.

I attend the plant engineering and management meetings on a daily basis where we report and assign work, we also discuss safety issues and feedback safety monitoring results.

As manufacturing engineer, I have been exposed to a new aspect of my work, HR. I am responsible, not only for the electrical work on the plant, but also the electrical personnel. The role includes producing safety contacts and carrying out briefings or technical training on new equipment, carrying out return to work interviews and arranging overtime.

In addition to this, Corus is sponsoring me to complete a part-time masters degree in, “Manufacturing management and technology”, with the Open University. I have just completed my first module and took the exam in October.

I am continuing to work towards CEng status with the IEE with support from Corus and my mentor.
