Why did you choose to work for Corus?

Corus is a large significant organisation within my local area, to gain a position here would allow me to gain exposure to the working practices of a multinational company, who are no doubt at the top of their game, as the 6th largest Steel producer within the world.  This includes the working practices and business models that are adopted within my particular department, HR, and other departments within the organisation.  I believe that the experiences that I have already, and am likely to be involved in over the next 9 months, will provide me with the fundamental understanding of HR practices within an organisation

What does your current role involve?

Since joining the company in August I have facilitated two assessment centres – which included coordinating all of the candidates, the venue and the assessors whilst also taking part in the event as a member of the interview panel.  I was also involved as an assessor in the Corporate “Early Bird Assessment Centre” held in November 2007.

Involved in the development of standard recruitment related documents that are used across the division, from standard forms to process guidelines.

My major project is that of redesigning the Induction process ensuring that it reflects best practice and to develop a programme that is thorough in content, engaging and also has the flexibility to be rolled out across the division with ease.

Other ad hoc duties include liaising with recruitment agencies and candidates with any queries or questions they may have – offering feedback to unsuccessful candidates when required amongst other tasks.

What training have you received since joining Corus?

Since joining Corus in August, I have received both Telephone Interview Training and also Assessment Centre Training

What are your future career aspirations?

To progress further in the field of HR, within which particular area I am unsure, as I haven’t had as much exposure as I feel necessary to make such a decision.  However, I am certain that I would prefer to specialise within a chosen area, rather than to be in a generalist role.  I am open about the idea of travelling to warmer weathers – so that may also be a development within my future – to secure a position in another country.  Other than this only to enjoy the journey and learn as much as possible along the way.

Do you have any hints/tips/advice you would give to someone applying to Corus:

Be clear on your objectives for the year, if you are, you may be given the opportunity to explore these within your placement.
