Give it all you’ve got!

When did I join the Corus scheme? Straight after my GCSEs. I’d been thinking about doing A-level maths and physics, but saw a leaflet and went to have a look around the college. I’d always wanted to study for a degree and the people I spoke to said that I could do that after the course if I wanted. Plus Dad suggested that a trade – with proper qualifications – would be a good thing to have under my belt.

Unlike many other students, as a Corus Apprentice you actually get paid to go to college! I found it hard work, but also good fun, and the careful balance between the practical side and the theory made sure I stayed interested.

And the best bits? Well, for me it was that you get to learn a real trade as well as an education – and get paid while you’re learning. I also went on to university to study for an electrical engineering degree – with no tuition fees or stuff like that to worry about.

I’m now working as an electrical engineer with Corus, responsible for electrical maintenance and plant safety. I’ve an HNC and a degree behind me, plus a fantastic understanding of electrical engineering. If you’re interested in a particular trade and have the chance to join the scheme, buckle down and give it all you’ve got. Because it really is well worth it.
