Grab the chance!
When I left school, I took a City & Guilds in Joinery. Then, fed up with not earning, I made a snap decision and became a supermarket butcher of all things!
It wasn’t long before I decided that a future working behind the butchery counter wasn’t for me. I knew that I needed to get some serious qualifications under my belt, but I wasn’t sure where to go.
My friend’s dad works for Corus and, one day when we were chatting, he started telling me about all the things I could do in the manufacturing industry. It all seemed really interesting and I contacted my local Connexions advisor, found out about the scheme and applied.
I’ve now been on it for five months, and I’m enjoying every minute. It’s not a bit like going back to school. You get treated like an adult – and I’ve made some really good friends.
You start off by learning the basics – then get to try out the things you’ve learnt in the workshop. I think we’ll soon be finding out about gas burning and welding – and that’s something I’m really looking forward to.
At first, the size of the steelworks can seem quite daunting. But as you learn more about what goes on, you soon feel confident enough to get stuck in.
Corus apprenticeship schemes have a great reputation. You get more options, earn a decent wage and can make your way to a good career. Go on, grab the chance!
